When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Businessman!

When we ask our Filipino children what they want to be when they grow up, the usual answers are – doctor, lawyer, teacher, fireman, policeman, etc. However, seldom do we hear them say, “I want to be a businessman.” I guess going to the entrepreneurship expo organized by DLSAA, “Bullseye! Ignite your Business Animo,” had me thinking so what can inspire the young generation of Filipinos today to become entrepreneurs.

Talking to DLSAA President, Mr. Johnny during the press conference for this entrepreneurial seminar, he said that DLSAA wish to extend its hand not only to its senior members but also to the younger ones especially those who will be graduating soon. As such they have identified one of their needs which is career enrichment.

And enriched it truly is! DLSAA has invited two very aspiring businessmen to share their humble beginnings and how they finally made it big in business. Listening to these Filipino entrepreneurs is so empowering it makes you feel like you can do it yourself. So to share their message to the DLSU students and the attendees of the entrepreneurship expo, let’s give a round of applause to Mekenis’ Pruds Garcia and Chatime and French Baker’s Johnlu Koa.

The Mind Museum Summer Programs for 2013

We are a family of geeks and proud to be one. For my brother’s birthday, the extended family went to The Mind Museum and spent the entire afternoon playing with the big toys we found at TMM. Sprawled across the floor, we marveled together as we watched the Milky Way being created. Yep, across all age and size, when it comes to Science, we all play like children. Just imagine the fun and chaos we had.

Now, exploring The Mind Museum can go further. This summer, you’re kids can experience a different kind of fun by enrolling in three different 2013 summer programs of The Mind Museum.

Bullseye! Ignite your Business Animo (An Entrepreneurship Expo for Students)

One Saturday morning, I woke up very early in the morning to help my son prepare for his home school class. This particular Saturday is different from my usual Saturdays because I have to leave very early together with my child. That particular Saturday morning’s destination is the first-ever entrepreneurship expo organized by the De La Salle Alumni Association (DLSAA). The expo was dubbed, “Bullseye! Ignite your Business Animo,” which happened last March 16, 2013 at the newly-built Henry Sy, Sr. Hall of the De La Salle University-Manila.

The expo featured discussions by renowned Filipino entrepreneurs who are proven successful in their own businesses. Its mission is to build awareness and harp on the novelty of the Bullseye Expo which was attended by students, DLSU alumni and the general public. DLSAA believes that they could contribute to nation building directly to its members through entrepreneurship.

There Is No Escaping Riverscapes In Flux at Met Museum Manila

After an entrepreneurial education seminar from DLSAA, I had one more stop on a very sunny Saturday and that is to attend the curator’s talk for Riverscapes In Flux at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila.

There were four artists who attended the talk namely: Goldie Poblador (Philippines); John Romero (Philippines); Sutthirat Supaparinya (Thailand); and Nguyen The Son (Vietnam). They were also joined by Claro Jr. Ramirez (curator from Philippines), Mr. Tran Luong (art curator from Vietnam) and Ms. Almuth Meyer-Zollitscg (Director of the Goethe-Institut Vietnam).

The talk began by each artist talking about the creation of their projects including their inspiration, their vision and reason for creating their project. While listening to these diverse people talk about how a river shaped their lives, I was also wondering at how a particular river is shaping my life. You see I live near a very influential river here in the Philippines. This river is called the Pasig River. Hearing how these artists were moved by the rivers in their respective areas made me think, “How do I see the rivers in my life?”

Profound thoughts of rivers and life lead me to one question I have for the artists and curators in this art talk, “If your Riverscapes In Flux art is to be used as an educational tool, what lesson should students take from it?”

Each artist, as expected, had their own take…

Digital Art Made Fun by Photojeepney (Giveaway and Complete Contact Details)

When moving to a new house, it gives you time to look at old photo albums and get new picture frames to match the interior of your home. What I did not expect is that it will take me months and months to sort all of our pictures not to mention scan them. As tedious as it may sound, I actually find it amusing. There are photos that made me laugh again and even cry a tear or two. There were also pictures I would like to hide in the deepest and farthest corners of the world out of embarrassment. Still, these pictures are my family’s treasured moments.

Photo Surreal (Revised)

So as not to lose these photos forever, hence the reason why I decided to digitize them. However, I wish there are photos I can do something more. I don’t just want to preserve them. If I can, I want to restore them to their former glory or improve them. On the other hand, my limited knowledge in photo manipulation hinders me to do so. Then one day I heard of Photojeepney, an up and coming Filipino company, that has the answer to my precious moments dilemma.

It’s a cliche but indeed a photo is worth a thousand words. A happy smile is interpreted the same way all over the world as a moment of joy even if we do not speak the same language. But what if my picture is fading, can I still keep that precious moment? That is where Photojeepney comes in.

What is Photojeepney?

Missionaries of Charity Christmas Party 2012 for the Children of Tayuman

I should have written this blog months ago but I didn’t. I have no excuse. Life happened and I decided to delay it. So what made me write it? Well, a blogger made a random comment and said that we are months away from Christmas. I found that funny and agreeable to me. How time flies!

Tayuman Christmas Party 2012 Special Education Philippines

That blogger’s comment reminded me of last Christmas 2012. Every Christmas there is one party that makes me sooooooooooo excited. Not because of the gifts (when actually there are overflowing gifts in this party, in fact, hundreds of them). Not because of the prizes (but actually there’s lots of loot to be given away– in every game). Not because of the holiday presentations (but there are so many song and dance numbers one after another). I am excited of this Christmas party because in this party I get to see not one, not tens not a hundred but hundreds of children. Oh yes, all 600 hundred smiling, happy and blessed children.

So what makes me giddy about Christmas?

Young Filipino Stars from Garfield All Stars Apparel

I remember when my child and my sister were much much younger, we attended several events together with their childhood friends. When I say events, I mean events for children where kids get to meet either their favorite cartoon character; celebrate together in their favorite fast-food restaurant or spend a special holiday like Treat or Treat and Easter Sunday.

As they grow older, the number of events we go to lessened already. This maybe because (1) I urge them to go on their own and (2) I am willing to go but its their turn to say “No” because they think its too “kiddie” for them. Kiddie? I say, “You’re not even in your teens!” Times have changed. I told the young lady who attended to us when we were looking for board shorts, “I’m sorry miss I can’t buy the shorts even if I like it but my son does not like it. May opinyon na sya eh!” I was expecting the lady to be irked after spending time looking for the right size and then just to be turned down. Yet, surprisingly, she smiled and said “Ok lang po yun.” which prompted me to smile a smile of relief. Finally, someone who understands.

Speaking of one of those days, one day I heard that there will be a fashion show for Snoopy All Stars. When I mentioned “fashion show”, my request for a chaperone was immediately shot down. Then came the Garfield All Stars Event.
